And there is certainly an abundance of that! When you reach Kalavryta, you will realize the reason behind the town’s well chosen name, since “Kala Vryta” literally translates to “Good Waters”. This place was named after the small semicircular cave, where the stalactites have created a wondrous scenery that resembles a courtroom. The next stop is the location Dikastiria. In fact, in the location Katarraktis the river plunges impetuously and almost vertically under the railway bridge. It passes through the gorge next to Vouraikos River that creates small and bigger waterfalls and natural pools.
The journey lasts for approximately one hour, departs from Diakopto and terminates in Kalavryta, with an intermediate stop in Megalo Spilaio. The train covers a distance of 22 kilometers and reaches an altitude of 750 meters. The train features special pinions inside the wheels, which are used when the steep gradient increases and latch on the rail, both during the ascent and descent.
The classification of the railway as “Rack” or “Cog” comes from the cog wheels these trains use that mesh in the rack rail, helping them to operate on steep grades. The railway network is toothed on steep gradients. The train covers the 22 kilometer journey traveling at a speed of 30-40km/h when moving along the regular rack and 6-15km/h when moving along the toothed racks. With an unparalleled journey that lasts for about one hour and starts from Diakopto, the rack railway runs through the gorge of Vouraikos and the village of Zachlorou, ending up in Kalavryta. You mentioned it being so windy up there should we pack a windbreaker to put over our jackets? I also wondered if you could bring yaktrax to put on shoes so not to slip in icecastle? If I am unable to walk to ice palace or in snow with my family as I have bad back, knees and afib can I wait someplace inside at the top for them I cannot tell if there is in inside place at the very top? If wearing jeans do we need to wear base layers like smart wools under our jeans and shirts or will we get too hot? Also when you walk out on the snow areas is it packed or will we go thru several inches of snow? My shoes are just Merrell slip ons waterproof but they don’t comb up over my ankle. We will bring warm jackets, hats, gloves and will wear hiking shoes. We are going to be staying in Lauterbrunnen May 17-May 20 and hopefully going up to Jungfrau.
